Diploma in Textile Engineering education

Brief history of textile education in Bangladesh

The start of textile education in Bangladesh can be traced back to British regime. Some semi formal education for textile was there in the territory of Bangladesh back then. In 1921, a weaving school was established in Narinda Dhaka to provide textile technician education by offering artisan level courses.

During 1911-1947 semi formal education training programs and vocational schools on textile education was in existence. Eventually, the first formal education on textile began in 1954 with the first diploma course in textile technology in the East Pakistan Textile Institute which became widely known as Textile College afterwards. The college later updated itself and started offering bachelors degree (B.Sc.) in Textile Technology in 1978 and was named as the College of Textile Technology (CTT).

The Department of Textiles (DOT) which was established in 1978 started reintroducing vocational and diploma in textile education to meet the growing industry demand. To fulfill the demand of the growing industry, the Textile Industry Development Center (TIDC) was established in January 1979 under a public sector organization- Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation (BTMC) with the technical and financial assistance of UNIDO this was afterwards upgraded to National Institute of Textile Training Research and Design (NITTARD).

Finally, in around 1986 national NGO's started introducing education and vocational training in textile. And gradually in 1998, a private university started providing education in Primary Textile and RMG.

The department of textile under ministry of textiles Govt. of Bangladesh is controlling six textile institutes offering 4 years diploma course. There are some institutions which offer various professional training in this area. National Institute of Textile Training Research and Design (NITTARD) is one of them. It has gone through a massive restructuring and has become a public- private partnership education and training institute.

It is now run by Bangladesh Textile Mills Associations (BTMA). It has five departments yarn manufacturing, fabric manufacturing, wet processing, apparel manufacturing and quality control. It claims to offer good quality training and education in textile with sufficient machineries for practical training. Previously it offered only 1 year training courses but now started offering textile engineering courses from 2011. It has academic collaboration with Niederrhein University of Germany and University of Bolton, UK. The One-Year certificate course it used to offer is being accredited by International Textile Institute, UK to be of Licentiateship of Textile Institute (LTI) Standard.
